I am from the so called 'High Caste' too. Note that I used 'so called' because the caste system has nothing to do with family or birth. It is attached to a person directly. For the good of that girl, please leave her alone. Your pseudo-intellectual parents would make that innocent girl miserable. The word Brahmana (brahmin) literally means someone who follows or has knowledge of brahma (creation, God , does what God wants etc.). Or a more liberal translation would be someone who is humble, does not get angry, jealous, does not have lust, etc.
It is a historically known fact that until 500 AD or so, people would change from one caste to another. That is like the son of an engineer becoming a doctor and vice versa. So the way the caste system is followed today (due to ignorance) is an insult to our ancient teachers who specifically said that it has nothing to do with birth. So in other words, a man or woman born as a Christian can be a brahmin as long it is shown in the behavior. sources: 1)Mahabharata: Quote by Yudhishthir(Dharmaraj): Brahmana is neither by birth nor learning. It is behavior which makes one brahmana. 2)Bhagwad gita is to Hindus what BIBLE is to Christians:
Here is what it says: sanskrit: janma Jaata Shudra Sarve Karmena Brahmanan Bhavati translation: A person is at a 'nobody' by birth and its only the deeds of each person which finally make him a Brahmin. 3)Srimad Bhagavatam: sanskrit:viprad dwisadgunayutad aravinda nabha pararvinda vimukkhat svapancam varistham Brahmin is not a birth right, being a Brahmin is a qualification and one has to qualify for that. And no one has a right to judge other than God.
So technically, even for a very good person, only God has the right to say who is a Brahmin. But is some cases it is obvious that a person is not a Brahmin. For example : Your parents are not because they are hurting the feelings of that girl based on some things which are not even in hinduism. You are taking advantage of the fact that she has no knowlege of hinduism and hence cannot argue with you in the way I did. You are obviously not brahmins and it is because of people like your parents that Hinduism has become a subject of ridicule by intelligent people. If everone was following exactly what was in the Bhagwat Gita (Hindu equivalent of the Bible), then there would have been no way to say that this girl is of a low caste (unless your parents knew that she was murderer, thief, arrogant, etc) If I understand the Bhagwat Gita correctly, your parents (who say such hurting words and judge someone without knowing them) belong to a low caste. Sorry for being so blunt but if your parents are so pseudo-intellectual , they need to be prepared to take such criticizm. They have no right to say that they are High and they understand what God wants. Did God send them an email telling them that? Or maybe God told them over the dinner date they had with Him?
Bottom Line: Violence (Hurting others through words or action) or arrogance are qualities that disqualify someone from being
a Brahmin. So since you called her low caste it is violence and calling yourself high caste is arrogance.
So you all are not Brahmins. Show this response to your parents.
In my case, I might be a pseudo-Brahmin(or so called Brahmin) also because I do not think I have all the qualities.
In fact, ironically, all of us (you , me , and your parents) might be non-Brahmins and maybe only that girl is a Brahmin
in God's eyes.
Thanks for this wonderful answer to the question above!
I really appreciate when someone really reads his/her holy book and try to understand what it is saying and not just listen to what he/she is used to listen.
I am Atheist…but I'm open minded and hearted and interested in all cultures and religions.
@any17: Nobody will be able to give u a suggestion what to do. It's on you. Only you know ur parents and how they will or could react. And only you can decide what u really want and if u are able to handle reactions of ur parents.
