Indians on Ships

There are so many Indians working on cruise ships these days. I say "these days" as I don't recall as many six years ago - which was the last time I worked for Carnival. Of course, it may be because six years ago I simply hadn't noticed as much as I do now, given the circumstances have changed. Many of them work in security, others as wait staff or in the gift shop, and all over. We even have Samir, an Indian magician on board. I enjoy practicing my (very limited) Hindi with them. Many of the Indians are married with families back home that they are supporting from afar. They go back to India and their families after 6-9 months when their contract ends. When asking them if they would like to return home for good, many of them have said they prefer working on ships and will continue the lifestyle.

Nice to hear about your cruise ship experience. I met my Indian BF on a cruise 3 years ago. It’s hard to maintain the long distance relationship, but worth it!!! I have alot of admiration and respect for all the crew members. Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures.

This is exactly the problem MDG… Why go back when you can travel the world, meet polite tourists, earn a sort of decent wage etc. They earn good money, come back for the requisite family time and are back off again. It’s why so many people go to Singapore, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai etc.

India is quite frankly, a horrible country. It is is destitute. It has crumbling infrastructure, horrible pollution, entrenched corruption etc.

The people are rude, obnoxious, inconsiderate and unfriendly. This is what happens when you have a population of 1 billion with a 3rd world infrastructure.

And many of the indians reading my post will criticize me, but they only do that because of blind nationalism. Did you ever notice how people pee in public, throw litter as if India is their own trashbin? You will never see those same people do that abroad. Why is that?

6 generations of my family fought for India in the military. I was born there. I visit India every year, half of my family lives in India and I love it, in spite of all these things. But I could never live there forever again because of the PEOPLE and not the country. The people of India are horrible and this will not change. People have no civic sense there. Look at the commonwealth games mess. Instead of admitting faults, they actually had the arrogance to say Indian cleanliness standards are different than those of the west. Pee on the floors isn’t cleanliness.

You may ask me what I do for India myself besides criticize it, but this isn’t a film like Swades. I do what I can, I donate to charities there, help out my family, always give more money and treat others with respect. Living in America, we learned to wash our own dishes, do our own laundry, mop our own floors, be self-sufficient. And yet, when we come to India, we see able-bodied people lounging around while the poor maid comes for her pennies a day. Once, we were at a wedding, and I paid the server 1000 rupees just because I pitied him, and I was chastised by relatives of India who said I was crazy to give so much etc.

I found males are the real problem of India. The only hope is females but they are far too marginalized currently. Anyways I’ll end the rant, hope your life stays exciting MDG. Do keep us upto date on any potential exciting aspects of your cruising days :)

And to my fellow Indians, Jai Hind.

      Dear HS,
I am an Indian and I am dismayed at your ignorance about India because: According to economic historian Angus Maddison in his book The World Economy: A Millennial Perspective, India had the world’s largest economy from the first to 11th century, and in the 18th century, with a (32.9%) share of world GDP in the 1st century to (28.9%) in 1000 AD, and in 1700 AD with 24.4%) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_history_of_India

The US has taken about 250 years to reach what it is today.India is only 60 years old !!! Give it a chance ,man.Be a sport! The British rule had a very devastating effect on this country.
Many expats in India say to me that India now is the US of fifties!
I am also disappointed by your lack of intelligence. If you say that you visit India every year, you would notice that every year there is a lot of improvement(a lot of change). My European friend says that his country has remained the same for a long long time.
And lastly I’m shocked at your lack of courage.Be a part of this new brave world !The US today is what it is because of the COURAGEOUS men and women who built it.I’m absolutely sure you will eat crow in another 20 years.(just like the british gentleman who challenged that he would eat every bar of steel Tata produced if he could do it.Tata now is one of the biggest steel companies in the world .It acquired a much bigger Anglo-Dutch company called Corus.God bless you

    • Claxman says:

India was one of the richest countries of the world. The history of US is just about 500 years to exaggerate, but India’s history is 1960 million years which is almost close to 2 billion years. Even spiritual teacher like Jesus traveled to India to learn spirituality. But all of India’s wealth was looted and thats how India became poor. I will not be surprised if one day Germans, Americans will try to patent out sacred texts. Everyone knows how they have tried to patent Turmeric, Basmati rice, margosa (neem). Although it is India’s wealth, India thinks that it is for the benefit of entire humanity, but the western countries are only after making money by trying to file patents. Everyone sees India as poor, but no one wants to talk about how it happened. That shows how much respect we have for our own country.

i agree 100% with ur views.

    • Knut says:

Nuffof your rants, Yawn Yawn Yawn
Don’t you have a job to do?
Nine to five? eight to two ?
No worries bout India, Its doing well.
They are happy people, heaven or hell.
The pee on the floor isn’t so bad,
Think of the unborns, aborted and dead !
Think of the marriages that end up in divorce,
Ask elders bout lives, its really worse.
India is ugly outside, West is inside.

      Not taking any sides,
      Just pointing out the facts.
      Real problem is us,
      our materialist thinking.
Trying to bend the rules of God,
We try to enjoy as much.
      Forget about others,
      and think of just us.
Tis is true for all of us,
      North, south, east or west.
We think of us as the body,
      race, country, community.
      Never think we are all
      Children of God.
      All are equally poor,
      till they love the God.
Oh I beg your mercy, Oh Almighty God.
Now onwards I promise, whatever I write,
      Will be only Your glories,
      Your glories, Your glories.
Let me not waste my time,
      in stupid things as this.
      Commenting on blogs,
      Fighting like street dogs.
      With this prayer to almighty
      Say goodbye to all.
      Request yall to stop cursing,
      write nice words.
      Words will come,
      Just think of God,
Pray to God, pray for all.
Oh my dear, Oh my dear
Oh the all merciful, Almighty Lord.

@MDG: After having so many failed relationships why don’t you try something else – may be change your profession ! A lap dancer , hooker , call girl or prostitute should suffice .

  4. Ninu says:

Mr Abhimanyu (or Mr Parthasarathy or Mr Shaunak), or more appropriately, Mr. Juvenile Delinquent, why don’t you go have a life! Or do you enjoy being in the limelight as mentioned

  5. Abhimanyu says:

@Grace : I am a computer science and engineering graduate working for a reputed IT firm in South India . I came to Delhi to meet some industrial clients in Gurgaon and would be back again in Hyderabad on 12th April .

  6. Abhimanyu says:

@Grace : Everyone knows the quality of education in Australia and how Australian universities offer on the spot admissions without any entrance tests , eligibility criteria in lieu of capitation fees/donation . It’s a pity that even after completing a degree course in Australia your ” Surd ” husband is forced to drive a taxi . My uncle who lives/works in Australia is a qualified medical professional ( surgeon ) and not a taxi driver .

  7. Abhimanyu says:

@Grace: You look like a typical pot bellied ” Punjabi Housewife ” . I must complement you that despite your overweight stature you are not low on libido . You are as horny as any other western woman . You had premarital sex with your hubby and even conceived prior to marriage . Not to mention your age is only 20!

  8. G Parthasarthy says:

@Grace : Marriages of Indians and westerners seldom last . He ( Vishav ) is a fool for having married a fat sow like you . But one cannot blame him ( Vishav ) . A monkey like Vishav can only get a fat , ugly and morbidly obese woman like you .

  9. G Parthasarthy says:

    Hey MDG,
Am one of those PIGS (poor Indian grad student). I hit this blog randomly while looking for something else (forgot what, but something about Bangalore). I don’t have a tad idea about any relationship forget multi cultural relationship.

I used to doze off when someone used to talk about these things. But I read this blog and Oh My God, I am hooked. This is so amazing. You are really an amazing story teller. Instead of working on my research, I am reading this blog. Cant help it.
Have a request, Dont ever delete this blog. If at all you do, can you write another blog ? And how is the ship treating you ?
    Eager to know more.

Like others, I wont comment on what you should or should not do. Just a suggestion, whatever you do, enjoy life. Enjoy life. Enjoy life. da da da. And yeah, Be happy.

  12. Nicki18229 says:

Well I’m glad you are having gret time and meeting new people! I can’t wait to read more about it. I hope you don’t close this blogif you do I understand why I hope you start another one and let us all know.

  13. Rajesh says:

    Dear HC,

Remember material wealth is not the most important thing in the world.

    >>they actually had the arrogance to say Indian cleanliness standards >>are different than those of the west
Have you been to Germany or Switzerland? Then you probably know it is all relative to one another.

    >> Living in America, we learned to wash our own dishes, do our own laundry, mop our own floors, be self-sufficient.

Please remember these house maids work most often only in NRI or PIO like you. “Be self-sufficient” -really how often did you use through the food rest in the bin.

BTW, people in Europe (including me), consume 6 times more energy and the US (12 times more energy) as the ones in India / china – research from IPCC.
