About two months back, MIM was overjoyed to learn he secured an internship position he applied and interviewed for. When the big boss was interviewing him, he asked MIM that if things should go well, if MIM would consider and be able to be hired on full time. MIM said of course with one stipulation, H1 Visa. Being that we're living in a decently small city, the big boss had never heard of an H1 Visa before but he said he'd look into it.
Fast forward until now, and I just received an excited message from MIM stating that the big boss had done his research and decided to go ahead with the process. If the government approves it, MIM will finally see his dreams come true after so much struggle!
So proud of him!

Reminds of my struggles few months back when I was looking for a job, while on the verge of graduating with a masters. Had a perfect GPA and guess the best in my research field. All negotiations used to stop when I used to mentioned H1-B ! And its not just the small town companies, I am talking about multi-billion dollar companies. They simply refused. Thats when I decided: No more career in industry (unless its my own !!)…… decided to stay for another couple of years and go for a PhD…….now enjoying the freedom that comes with being a PhD candidate…. and value it more whenever I see someone struggling for a job/H1-B….. The only flip side: I get paid half as much as everyone else my age…but I am happy
I feel for you, Knut! It is such a struggle. Luckily most of MIM’s friends (and now possibly him) secured their H1′s through interning first. Seems if you nag that internship you’re on your way.
If you feel for me, you will be the first one to do so !! It was really a humbling experience. A topper throughout and not getting any job !! And the problem was that I even applied in India and Europe but did not get through. In US at least they interviewed, in India and Europe, they did not even interview. I felt so much frustrated. Looked like the whole education system is sham (which it is anyway). So I decided to carve my own way by going for a PhD.
Congrats MIM! So there is an opportunity for long term employment?
Yes Julia! If the government clears it, he is good to go!
why such a difficulty securing this H1-B visa? My husband is Canadian born and bred and all his academia aspirations in the USA ground to a halt because of this as well…i dont understand.
You dont have to worry about H1-B in case you are in academia (not even green card). Thats why I am going for a PhD !
Recently the government really cracked down on H1′s. For example, checking up on companies making sure the employees had a degree in that exact field of work and if they didn’t, they’d get the boot. Also, the economy is to blame, many places are no longer interested in spending money to fund H1′s. And Knut is right, if you stay in academia, you don’t have to worry about H1, that is also why MIM went back for a second master’s. I’m sure there are many more reasons, these are the ones I am most familiar with!
Hi, I was just wondering, are you back in a relationship with MIM? Just curious.
Hi Neo, no, we are not back into a relationship but we do keep in touch, especially with big updates like this one.
Stay away from my son you evil bitch
Why, MIM’s Mom, I didn’t know you moved to Kansas!
